Matlock Rugby Vice Presidents Newsletter: December 2017

MATLOCK 37 BAKEWELL 7

A great day down at Cromford where we hosted our friends from along the A6. This was preceded by our best ever Vice Presidents lunch with 95 VPs and guests attending including our NLD President and officials from Bakewell.

The VP office sincerely thank all those who attended and for raising a fabulous sum of money for Motor Neuron Disease which was prompted by Doddie Weir prior to the Scotland vs New Zealand match recently. Doddie has set up a foundation UK wide to generate funds for this terrible disease and we here in Derbyshire have a MND unit where the fantastic sum raised of £730 will be going. Once again thank you all. Also thanks to those who made the lunch a success (kitchen and bar) especially Les Davis who chaired the event in his own inevitable  style and Ian McCluskey who had a difficult job of arranging the whole event over 2-3 months.

A report of the Blue Boys game can be downloaded from: http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/matlock/teams/9812/match-centre/0-3830198

We get it before the Matlock Mercury! Thanks Tony.

Next week, 9th December, the Blue Boys travel to play Coalville and on the 16th December they entertain Dronfield at Cromford Meadows. Both games will kick off at 2.15pm. So please continue your valuable support for one of the best supported clubs in Derbyshire.

MATLOCK LADIES

Matlock Ladies continued their progression with a development game against Amber Valley. Photographs can be downloaded from their Facebook page – Matlock Ladies RFC.

Awards presented to 2 long serving members of staff!

At the commemoration event of Chris Loeber’s work with the Greenaway Workshop, Laura presented awards to 2 long serving employees of the workshop, pictured below.

They read, Robert with 30 years service and Barry with 20; who was appropriately wearing the England Rugby shirt. Chris would have been very happy.

Vice Presidents Newsletter- March 7th 2017

Dear Vice Presidents,

VICE PRESIDENTS LUNCH

I start this newsletter by thanking our Vice Presidents and their guests who attended our successful lunch on Saturday. I am sure you will agree that it was a most enjoyable day in the company of our NLD President, Jeff Mapp, our Coalville visitors and many sponsors. Thanks also go to Ann and Gordon Statham who travelled all the way from Haywards Heath on Saturday morning to renew their ties with the Club. In fact Gordon played alongside Dave Ramsden, who looked after them royally. Thanks go to our 'professional' auctioneer, VP Adrian Fidler, who persuaded, cajoled and bullied bidders to part with £150 which will go to the Derbyshire Air Ambulance, an organisation that will also benefit from Adrian's endeavours to celebrate his 25 years in business. Please see attached flyer for his auction at Edensor on 23rd March. Well worth supporting.

The most abiding memory I am sure we will take away from this event will be the recognition of the Honorary Life Membership awarded to Terry Boswell. As you know Terry was very emotional but pleased that he could attend. Photographs can be downloaded along with snaps (if we can call them that!!) of the day including the rugby action from the links below including Matlock Senior Rugby on Facebook.

You will also see our under 15's squad taking a well earned break from their car washing duties, proceeds of which are going towards their rugby tour. Well done lads.

MATLOCK 1ST XV  5 COALVILLE 1ST XV 27

The above scoreline certainly took the gloss off the day but all credit to Coalville who showed strength in their commitment. Colin's photographs and Tony's match report can be downloaded from:

Next Saturday the Blue Boys travel to Kesteven with a 3pm kick off. Please find a location map below:

MATLOCK 2ND XV  &  MATLOCK 3RD XV

Our resident scribe, Chris Loeber, sent his excellent report for the 2s and 3s as follows:
"PAVIORS 2nd  32   MATLOCK 2nd 32
64 points - shared equally. What a game!
The second's rarely get anything other than a good beating when they venture across the border to Nottinghamshire and on Saturday travelling to face a side who play in a higher section of the Pennant with a much changed team the prospects didn't look good.
However, it is a measure of the ever growing playing strength of the Club that the seconds were bitterly disappointed to only come away with a draw. Fielding 3 17 year olds Matlock were 20 - 17 down at the interval, leading 32 - 22 with 10 minutes to play and had to settle for a draw.
Could Matlock have seen the game out  - well with experience perhaps they could. The test for the team is to win the next time they find themselves in the same situation.
Our strength in depth is improving  - the second teamers must now start to put pressure on the firsts.
This week the eggs went to winger Rich Cook - back on leave from the RAF he found himself on the wing and flew (!) in for a couple of tries.
BELPER 2nd/3rd 5  MATLOCK  3rd 34
Bruce's boys recorded an excellent win down the valley at Belper. With a squad of 22 ( several of whom were told that there was nothing to this rugby lark ) Matlock ran away with the game in the second half - surely we can't have been the fitter team!
PLEASE NOTE - This week the second's take a rest and the thirds face Tupton at Cromford. It's rumoured that this will be another fun Friday under the lights. We'll make sure a message is circulated during the week.
Chris."

Matlock Rugby Vice Presidents Newsletter- 19th December 2016

Please see below the latest news from the Matlock Rugby Club:

As we are entering the festive season it gives me great pleasure to publish our last Newsletter of the year with the news that all Matlock Rugby squads were winners on Saturday! Congratulations go to all including our coaches and back room staff.

WEST BRIDGEFORD 1ST XV 15 MATLOCK 1ST XV   19
The Blue Boys made it four in a row with a narrow win in Nottingham as can be seen from 'Scoop' Tony Hooton's report here.

'Paparazzi' Baker has uploaded his usual standard of photographic genius too:

SCOOP LOEBER REPORT
West Bridgford 2nd   14    Matlock  2nd   22

"Unfortunately, there was only one game for our 2nd and 3rd teamers as Derby, not for the first time this season, called off the 3rd team game on Friday evening – too late for as alternative fixture to be found. So it was either Christmas shopping or a trip to West Bridgford with the seconds. Fortunately, Bruce had already his presents bought and wrapped, so a very full Love Bus went to Nottingham.

Bridgford play in the League above us (where we want to be next season) and to come away with a hard earned, but well deserved win, was very pleasing.

Unfortunately, Harry Morton suffered a serious knee injury and our very best wishes go to him.

HALF SEASON REPORT

One of the senior club’s aims at the beginning of the season was to put out 3 sides each week, and I’m delighted to say that we’ve achieved this. Great credit goes to Chris Perry with the seconds and Bruce Johnson and Lee Brant (Milky) in the thirds. They move heaven and earth each week in the form of lots and lots of phone calls, texts, messages and Facebook posts to ensure that we get 3 teams on the pitch.

Of course, if the playing experience isn’t positive and enjoyable, guys will perhaps play one week but not the next. The 3rds have a fine group of senior players who are determined to introduce our youngsters to everything that’s right about senior rugby.

The seconds have great promise and potential. Essentially a young side, they are held together by a group of senior players who are keen to pass on their skills and experience and who demand that the side plays an open attacking style. Jonny Bunting, Elliot Boam, Adam Twyford and Chris Buckley (aided on occasions by Paul Lane) are the glue that makes this team successful.

Finally, it would only be right to report that the seconds (or at least one of their number) were again involved in a punch up on Saturday. Prop Daz Smith took part in a charity boxing night in Nottingham, where he lost on points but did make a mess of his opponent’s face and helped to raise £10,000 for cancer research. Well done mate.

Merry Christmas,

Chris
